Polinar Dam

The water at Polinar Dam sits absolutely still on calm days, reflecting the surrounding hills like dark glass. It's a straightforward reservoir, honestly - not dramatic or overly scenic compared to some of the Highland lochs you'll find elsewhere, but it serves a purpose and makes for a decent walk if you're based near Inverurie.

There's a path around the water that lets you stretch your legs without committing to anything too strenuous. The dam itself is functional rather than beautiful, but if you're staying at Hillhead Caravan Park just a few miles away, it's worth popping over for an hour to clear your head. Bring binoculars if you're keen on spotting water birds - that's probably the highlight, if I'm honest.

Walkers will find it unremarkable compared to other Scottish water features, and families with young children might exhaust the novelty fairly quickly. There's no cafe, no visitor centre, no grand views that'll make you gasp. It's the sort of place you visit because you're in the area and fancy a bit of fresh air rather than because it's essential.

Go midweek if you can - weekends see a bit more footfall from the locals. Allow 45 minutes to an hour for a gentle circuit. The best thing about it is genuinely just that it's free, easily accessible from Inverurie, and gives you an excuse to get outdoors.
