Polesburn Wood

Walk through Polesburn Wood and you're in proper old-growth forest - the kind where the canopy is thick enough to dim the afternoon light and moss covers everything that's stayed still long enough. It's a few miles south of Ellon, tucked into Aberdeenshire's quieter corners, and it feels like the sort of place locals know about but tourists miss entirely.

The woodland is straightforward: marked paths wind through mature trees, the forest floor is soft underfoot, and there's enough space to let kids run ahead without losing sight of them. Most people will spend an hour to ninety minutes here, depending on which routes you take. It's the kind of walk that works brilliantly after a long drive - enough to shake off the stiffness without requiring proper hiking boots or a packed lunch.

Histor buffs won't find much in the way of ruins or interpretation boards, so don't expect a lesson in ancient Aberdeenshire.
