Poldice Mine

The Cornish mining industry left deep scars across the landscape - and Poldice Mine, just outside Truro, is one of the places where you can actually see what that meant. This isn't a polished visitor attraction with gift shops and guided tours. It's a working archaeological site where volunteers have been excavating and conserving the remains of tin and copper mines that operated for centuries, with serious intensity during the 18th and 19th centuries.

What you get is the chance to walk around genuine mine workings - engine houses, mine shafts, and spoil heaps - while volunteers explain what you're looking at and why it matters. There's a small museum bit covering the geology and the people who worked here, which adds proper context to the crumbling stone buildings dotted across the site. The landscape itself tells the story if you're willing to read it.

It's absolutely for history types and anyone interested in industrial heritage. Families with older kids who can manage uneven ground will find it engaging; young children might struggle with the lack of interactive stuff. Allow a couple of hours to do it justice and pick a dry day - the site gets properly muddy.

Admission is free, which is remarkable given the work going on here. The site sits within easy striking distance of Trevarth Holiday Park (2.4 miles) and several other camps scattered within five miles, making it a solid half-day addition to a park-based holiday. Winter visits can be atmospheric; summer weekends get busier.
