Plympton St Maurice Church

Walk down the narrow lane towards Plympton and you'll stumble upon something genuinely medieval - St Maurice's Church, a proper working parish church that's been doing its thing since the 12th century. The flint and stone exterior is handsome enough, but it's inside where the real appeal lies. Medieval wall paintings, original wooden roof beams, and monuments that actually tell you something about Devon's history rather than just sitting there looking old.

History buffs will find plenty to get their teeth into here. The church has survived everything from Tudor times through to present day without being butchered into modern unrecognizability, which is rarer than you'd think. Allow 45 minutes to an hour if you're genuinely interested in the fabric of the building and the carvings.

It's a working church, so opening times aren't always straightforward - you'll need to check ahead or catch a service. Admission appears to be free, which is decent for what's on offer. Given you're this close to Plymouth, Plympton makes an easy detour on a park holiday, especially if you're based at Hidden Hill Devon's glamping site just five miles away. A morning visit here, then back for a hot tub and some peace and quiet feels like a proper plan. The village itself is worth a wander too, though don't expect it to be thrilling - it's genuine rather than touristy, which some travellers prefer.
