Pixey Copse Tor

The walk up to Pixey Copse Tor takes you through proper Devon woodland before opening onto moorland views that stretch toward Newton Abbot and beyond. It's not a dramatic peak - nothing like Dartmoor's higher tors - but that's rather the point. You get the walker's satisfaction without the crowds or the knee-battering descent.

The tor itself is modest granite outcrop, but the vantage point rewards the climb. On clear days the views across South Devon are genuinely good, and the moorland setting feels wilder than you'd expect from somewhere so accessible to the coast. Most people manage it in under two hours including a proper look around, though you could easily stretch that with a picnic at the top.

Families with older kids will find it manageable. Younger ones might flag on the woodland sections depending on how much scrambling you fancy. Walkers after something straightforward will appreciate the lack of boggy sections you often get on Dartmoor proper.

It works well as part of a broader moorland ramble from Oakmoor Touring Park - you're close enough that a morning visit fits easily into a wider holiday without eating up a full day. Spring and autumn are best; summer can be muggy under the trees, and winter mud is a genuine consideration. The real advantage over more famous peaks? You'll likely have it to yourself, especially mid-week.
