Pittenweem Arts Festival

Every August, Anstruther's fishing village transforms when the Pittenweem Arts Festival takes over. The whole thing sprawls across the East Neuk of Fife - artists throw open their studio doors, galleries fill with work that's actually made locally, and the streets fill with people who've come to browse rather than just pass through.

You'll find everything from painting and sculpture to printmaking and ceramics, spread across actual working studios rather than sterile gallery spaces. The beauty of it is you meet the artists themselves - they're there making work, answering questions, not standing behind a desk pretending to care. It's intimate in a way you don't get at bigger festivals.

Historically minded visitors will appreciate the setting. Pittenweem's been a working harbour town for centuries, and that character shows through everything - the cobbled streets, the fishermen still working alongside the creatives. Families might find some studios a bit quiet for young kids after an hour, but older children interested in art or coastal life will get properly engaged.

The festival runs for ten days in August, and while I'd check the exact dates and admission prices before you go, most studios operate on a casual drop-in basis. If you're staying at St Monans Holiday Park or Silverdyke just down the coast, this is well worth the short drive. The whole East Neuk has a proper creative energy during festival season - worth timing your park holiday around it if art matters to you.
