Walking through Pitholes Plantation feels a bit like stumbling into a proper secret - the sort of wooded corner that local Shropshire folk know well but rarely gets mention in glossy travel guides. It's a straightforward forest near Whitchurch, with the kind of dense tree cover that makes you grateful on drizzly days and wonderfully cool on rare sunny ones.

The plantation is ideal if you've got restless legs and want to get away from car parks and visitor centres for a bit. There are paths winding through the trees, nothing too demanding - good for families with younger children or anyone after a gentle woodland walk rather than a proper hike. The forest itself is the draw here, not a specific 'attraction' within it. No facilities to speak of, which means you won't find cafés or loos, so come prepared.

Timing-wise, you'll get a solid hour out of it, maybe longer if you're the dawdling type. Go late afternoon and the light filtering through the canopy is genuinely lovely. Spring and autumn are probably nicest - summer can feel a bit gloomy under all that foliage, and winter muddy.

It slots well into a park holiday at Hawk Lake, just 3.7 miles away. Both work as low-key Shropshire activities - neither demands much planning or costs much money. Combine them for a couple of hours without fuss, or skip this if you're after something with more going on. It's purely a walk in the woods, nothing more, but sometimes that's exactly what you need.
