Pitcairns

Pitcairns is a sprawling archaeological site just outside Perth that rewards a proper poke around if you're into Scotland's prehistoric past. What you're looking at are the remains of settlements and field systems dating back centuries, scattered across open ground where you can actually walk the landscape rather than peer through museum glass. The site isn't grand or instantly striking - no towering monuments here - but that's rather the point. You're reading the land itself, working out how people actually lived.

History buffs will get far more from a visit than casual passers-by, to be honest. You need to come with some curiosity about what you're looking at, maybe do a bit of homework beforehand. Walkers will appreciate the open terrain and the chance to stretch legs while thinking bigger thoughts about settlement patterns. Kids under ten will likely lose interest after twenty minutes unless you're genuinely enthusiastic about explaining Bronze Age agriculture.

Access appears to be free and unrestricted - it's the sort of site you turn up to on a whim. Allow an hour if you're taking it seriously, less if you're just having a quick look. Spring and early summer are best; winter can be muddy and the site loses definition. The nearness to Perth means you can easily combine it with a proper day out. Base yourself at one of the nearby caravan spots like Broadslap Farm or Greenhill Farm Glamping and use Pitcairns as part of a broader exploration of Perthshire's archaeological riches. Don't expect signage or facilities - this is archaeology in the raw.
