Pitcairlie Hill

The walk up Pitcairlie Hill takes barely forty minutes from Kinross, which makes it one of those perfect afternoon slots when you can't be bothered with a full expedition but still want proper views. The summit's a modest 308 metres, nothing that'll test your fitness, but it clears above the surrounding farmland enough to make the climb worthwhile.

From the top you get a decent panorama across Fife towards the Lomond Hills - on a clear day you can pick out the Tay Bridge in the distance, and the patchwork of fields below is oddly satisfying just to stand and look at. It's the sort of place locals do casually with the dog on a Sunday morning, which tells you something about how straightforward the whole thing is.

Families with younger kids will manage this without complaint. There's no scrambling, no exposed drops, just a steady path up and proper ground underfoot. The real audience though is walkers wanting to string together a few Fife summits in one go - Pitcairlie works as a warm-up or a closer depending on your route.

Free to access, no facilities at the top, so bring water. The whole thing including a breather at the summit takes about ninety minutes. If you're staying at Snugs at Logie Farm just up the road, this is exactly the kind of local hill that justifies the location - close enough for an impromptu sortie but far enough removed from Kinross itself to feel like proper countryside.
