Pit Pond

The water at Pit Pond sits dark and still, ringed by trees that crowd right up to the edge. It's a proper working gravel extraction lake near Crewkerne - the sort of place locals know and tourists mostly miss. You won't find much in the way of facilities or formal paths, but that's rather the appeal. The pond attracts serious birdwatchers and anglers who come for the tranquility and occasional sighting of rare species. A quiet walk around the perimeter takes 20 minutes or so, depending on how muddy things are.

Families with young kids might find it a bit underwhelming on its own - there's no playground or visitor centre, and the interest drops off quickly if your children aren't keen on spotting birds or just standing about. Walkers and nature types, though, will appreciate the calm. Early morning is best if you want to see wildlife. The nearest proper town is Crewkerne, about a short drive away.

It works well as part of a broader morning walk if you're staying at one of the nearby glamping spots. Esme's Escape is only 3.3 miles off, and Swallowfield Glamping not much further - both excellent bases for exploring the quieter corners of Somerset. You won't need more than an hour here, but it's the sort of place that reminds you why people bother coming to the countryside at all. Go early, bring binoculars if you've got them, and expect peace.
