About Pit Heap
The paths wind through thick forest, which means it's quiet and shaded even when the weather's warm. You're walking through what was industrial wasteland fifty-odd years ago, now reclaimed by birch, oak and undergrowth. There's something oddly satisfying about that. The summit isn't dramatic - no panoramic viewpoint or stone cairn - but stand up there and you can see why someone bothered to plant a forest here.
Walkers will get the most from this. It's proper woodland rambling without needing to drive far from Durham town centre. Not one for young kids who need instant gratification - there's no playground or visitor facilities - but teenagers and adults who actually enjoy being in a wood will find it worthwhile. Allow an hour to ninety minutes if you're taking the main routes without rushing.
It works well alongside Woodside Ridge Caravan Park, just five miles away, making it an easy morning or afternoon outing. Free access, as far as I can tell, and no set hours - it's genuinely wild. Go when it's not raining, mind. The paths get boggy, and there's not much shelter once you're in it.
