Pishiobury Park

Pishiobury Park sits just outside Sawbridgeworth and feels like the kind of place locals have known about for years without making a fuss about it. It's a proper nature reserve where you can actually walk without tripping over tour groups, which is rare enough in Hertfordshire these days.

The park itself is woodland and open grassland rolled together - decent for a couple of hours of wandering if you're the type who likes to spot birds and look for wildflowers rather than tick off Instagram locations. Families with younger kids will find it manageable, though there's nothing particularly dramatic to hold attention if they're after a day out. Walkers doing a longer route through the area will appreciate it as a quiet stop, but it's not the sort of place you'd plan a whole afternoon around unless you're genuinely keen on nature reserves.

If you're staying at The Wild Retreat at Redricks Lake just down the road, it's worth a leg-stretch on an easy morning. The reserve works better as part of a broader wander through the area rather than a destination in itself. Toad Abode, a bit further out, might appeal more if you're after something with more bells and whistles for a family base.

Best visited outside school holidays when it's quieter, and decent waterproofs are advisable - it can get boggy after rain. Worth an hour or so, but don't expect anything revelatory.
