Twenty acres of proper countryside just outside Henlow, Pirton Recreation Ground is the sort of place that rewards a wander rather than a quick tick-off. Grassland, scattered trees, and a network of paths make it ideal for a ramble if you're staying at Henlow Bridge Lakes nearby - you could easily combine both for a half-day outing.

It's grassland and woodland in the best sense: not manicured, not overrun with facilities, just quiet. Birds use it heavily, so bring binoculars if you're into that sort of thing. Walkers will find the paths straightforward enough, though it's not dramatic terrain - this is gently rolling Hertfordshire rather than anything that requires proper boots.

Families with younger kids might find an hour about right before they start demanding ice cream. Older children who actually walk without complaining will enjoy the space. History types won't find much to get excited about - there's no obvious heritage angle here, just land that's been left to itself.

The real value is as a breathing space between attractions or a way to stretch legs if you're based at one of the local holiday parks. It costs nothing and demands nothing, which is rather refreshing. Best visited on a day when you're not trying to cram seventeen things into an itinerary.
