Piper Wood

The trees here are tall and proper thick on the ground - Piper Wood near Loughborough is the sort of place you stumble into expecting a quick stroll and end up losing an hour to the smell of damp earth and birdsong. It's a working woodland, so it's not manicured, which is exactly why it works.

You'll find a decent network of paths threading through broadleaf and conifer stands. The canopy does that classic thing where it cuts the midday heat almost entirely, and on a heavy summer day that's genuinely brilliant. There are clearings if you want to sit and eat a sandwich, though bring a blanket - the ground can be boggy depending on rainfall.

This is proper walker territory. If you've got young kids expecting climbing frames and ice cream vans, they'll be bored within twenty minutes. But take teenagers or keen hikers and they'll appreciate the quiet. The woodland shows seasonal change well - spring's a riot of new growth, autumn turns everything copper and gold. Winter's manageable too, though muddy boots are guaranteed.

Allow an hour minimum, two if you want to loop properly. There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, so bring water. It works perfectly as a morning outing from Field of Dreams Glamping five miles away - get out, breathe some forest air, work up an appetite for lunch. Free to access as far as I can tell, though there's no information board to confirm it. Worth the detour if you're in the area and need to escape the flat Midlands countryside for a bit.
