Pillow Mounds

The bumps and hollows scattered across this Sussex woodland might not look like much at first - but you're walking among medieval rabbit warrens. Pillow Mounds, just outside Haywards Heath, are the earthwork remains of a 12th or 13th-century warren, where monks and nobles controlled breeding populations for food and fur. The raised mounds, which give the site its name, still ripple across the landscape like a frozen game of king-of-the-hill.

It's a proper trek for history buffs and anyone who enjoys the quiet satisfaction of reading an ancient landscape. You won't find interpretation boards or visitor facilities - this is archaeology in the raw. Bring a map, wear decent boots, and expect muddy ground even days after rain. Allow a couple of hours to wander and soak it in.

Histor nerds will find it compelling, though younger kids might struggle to see past "just lumps in the ground". Walkers doing a longer circuit through the local woodlands will get more from it than anyone popping in for twenty minutes. The warren sits within easy reach of several campsites - Worth Forest Glamping is barely over a mile away, and Hook Farm Campsite sits around 4.4 miles off - making it a decent addition to a South East camping break rather than a destination in itself.

Free to visit, free to wander. Just don't expect signage or hand-holding. This is one for the curious.
