Pil Tor

Pil Tor rises abruptly from the moorland south of South Brent, a granite outcrop that demands respect from anyone foolish enough to tackle it in bad weather. The climb itself isn't particularly long, but it's properly steep in places and the ground underfoot can be boggy even days after rain. Worth it though. From the summit you get commanding views across Dartmoor - on a clear day you can see for miles, though on the frequent grey days the cloud just rolls in and swallows everything.

This is walker territory, full stop. It's not a casual stroll and there's nothing to do once you reach the top except admire the view and eat a sandwich. Kids might enjoy the scramble up, but younger ones will struggle with the muddy descent. The rocks themselves are unstable in places, so you need to pick your feet carefully. Allow a couple of hours for the round trip depending on fitness.

There's no visitor centre, no car park facilities - just pull in where you can near the moorland edge. Pil Tor works brilliantly as a half-day venture if you're staying at one of the parks nearby, particularly Dartmoor National Park's various sites. It's close enough to South Brent for a quick lunch stop beforehand, but far enough into the moorland to feel genuinely remote. Go in the early morning if you want any solitude.
