Piggy’s Hollow (moat/earthworks)

You'll find yourself standing before a rather odd depression in the Leicestershire countryside - Piggy's Hollow is essentially a moat system with earthworks that hints at something once important enough to defend. The site sits quietly, unassuming, and frankly quite easy to walk past if you're not paying attention.

What you're looking at are the remains of what was likely a medieval fortified enclosure, though the full story isn't entirely clear - which somehow makes it more intriguing than a place with a gift shop and an interpretive board. The moat is still visible, creating a distinctive ring around the site, and if you're into earthworks and medieval fortifications, there's genuine interest here in trying to piece together what the structure once was.

This isn't a destination that'll keep you occupied for hours. Twenty minutes of poking about and photographing the earthworks is probably the limit, even if you're genuinely keen on this sort of thing. LLeicester is close enough that you could easily work this into a broader ramble through the area. If you're staying at Fox's Furrow just down the road, it's worth a detour on a morning walk, though don't expect signage or facilities. Access appears to be free, though there's nothing official about it - it's very much a case of turning up and having a look. Best visited on foot, as part of a longer country walk rather than as a standalone trip.
