Stretton Magna (site of)

All that remains of Stretton Magna today is earthwork - a scattering of bumps and hollows in a Leicestershire field that once formed a substantial medieval settlement. You won't find visitor facilities or interpretation boards here, just the physical traces of where people actually lived seven centuries ago.

The site sits roughly three miles south of Leicester, accessible enough for a short detour if you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Fox's Furrow or Village Farm Getaway. What makes it worthwhile is the chance to walk across genuine archaeological remains without crowds. The earthworks tell a proper story if you know what to look for - house platforms, property boundaries, the ghost of a settlement that vanished.

This is archaeology for the self-directed visitor. You'll need to find the location yourself and spend time reading the landscape rather than plaques. History enthusiasts and walkers will get far more from it than families with young children, who'll struggle to see why a lumpy field matters. Allow an hour if you're thorough, thirty minutes if you're just passing through.

There's no admission fee because there's nothing to pay at - it's entirely open access. Best visited when the grass is short, probably spring through autumn. Winter mud can obscure the features entirely. Combine it with other medieval sites in Leicestershire rather than treating it as a standalone trip. It's the kind of place that makes sense as part of a broader walking route, not a destination in itself.
