Piddlehinton Millennium Green

There's a modest strip of green along the River Piddle just outside Dorchester where locals go to clear their heads, and that's Piddlehinton Millennium Green. It's the sort of place you'll walk past without fanfare - a nature reserve that does exactly what it says on the tin without trying to be anything grander.

You get riverside paths, scrubby woodland, and a genuine sense that nature's been left to its own devices here. The River Piddle itself is the draw - proper peaceful for a quick stroll or, if you're staying at Green Valley Yurts nearby, an easy walk from your accommodation. Birdwatchers will find something worth watching. Families with young kids can manage the paths without trouble, though there's no playground or facilities to speak of.

It's free to access, which is never a bad thing, and takes about 20-30 minutes if you're just after a leg-stretch, longer if you're into spotting wildlife. Don't expect manicured gardens or interpretation boards - this is a working nature reserve, not a visitor attraction. The real value is in how close it sits to Dorchester town centre while feeling properly removed from it. If you're based at Giants Head Caravan Park or one of the other sites locally, it's a decent addition to your morning routine rather than a destination in itself. Best visited during spring and early summer when the water's flowing nicely and the birdlife is most active.
