Longbarrow

You'll find yourself standing on a Neolithic mound that's been here for roughly five thousand years - which puts most of human history into rather sharp perspective. Longbarrow, just outside Dorchester, is a long barrow burial site, the kind of place where Bronze Age folk laid their dead to rest, and walking up to it feels properly ancient in a way that museum displays just can't capture.

It's essentially a grass-covered earthwork that rises from the landscape with a quiet authority. The barrow itself is long and rounded, the sort of thing that took serious communal effort to build - no small feat for Neolithic communities. You can walk around it, observe the scale of it, and think about what rituals might have unfolded here five millennia ago. If you're into archaeology or Bronze Age history, this is genuinely worthwhile. For casual visitors, it's a decent short stop rather than a full afternoon - perhaps twenty minutes of poking about and contemplating mortality.

The walk is straightforward with no serious climbing involved, making it manageable for most fitness levels. Bring decent footwear though - it's prone to muddiness. There's no visitor centre, no tea room, no interpretation panels that I could find, so come prepared with your own knowledge or a good guidebook.

Stay at Green Valley Yurts and Cabin or Higher Moor Farm Campsite nearby, and you can easily fit Longbarrow into a broader Dorset archaeology trip alongside other local sites. Best visited in dry weather when the ground isn't boggy. Allow an hour if you're genuinely interested, thirty minutes if you're just passing through.
