Piddle Wood

The Piddle Valley isn't exactly on most people's radar, but the woodland here rewards those willing to leave the main roads. Piddle Wood itself is a proper stretch of mixed forest where the River Piddle winds through - yes, that's the real name, and yes, locals enjoy the novelty as much as you would.

This is walking country, straightforward stuff. The woodland floor is uneven in places, rooty and damp even after dry spells, so decent boots matter. There's no visitor centre or marked trails in the formal sense, but that's rather the point. You get lost among beech and oak without the crowds you'd find at, say, Wareham Forest Tourist Park just down the road. The river itself is the draw - shallow in summer, proper full in winter, and it's the kind of place where you might spot deer if you're quiet enough in early morning.

Allow a couple of hours for a gentle potter. It's not a destination in itself - you wouldn't plan a whole day around it - but if you're based at Wareham Forest or Purbeck Glamping, a woodland walk here makes a solid morning or late afternoon break. The nearest proper town is Wareham, about 4.5 miles away, so it's accessible but genuinely tucked away.

Walking families will find it fine, though there's nothing specifically for children. It's best in autumn and spring when the light filters through differently and the ground isn't either baked hard or waterlogged. Summer is busy-ish with locals, winter can be muddy and dark early. Straightforward, local, genuine.
