Picnic Tables, Balmacara

The picnic tables at Balmacara aren't much to look at on paper - a handful of wooden benches overlooking the water near Kyle of Lochalsh. But that's rather the point. This is where you stop after a proper walk through the nature reserve, sit down with a flask of tea, and actually notice things. The view across the bay pulls your eye toward Skye, and on a clear day it's genuinely worth pausing for.

It's family-friendly in the way that only a Scottish nature reserve can be - no crowds, no queue for the café, just space to breathe. Children will either love the freedom of exploring the surrounding woodland or get bored within twenty minutes, depending on their patience for insects and trees. Walkers benefit most here, particularly if you're doing the longer trails through Balmacara itself. The tables serve as a natural endpoint or midway rest, somewhere to refuel before heading back.

The reserve is free to access, and the picnic area asks nothing of you except a bit of consideration for litter. Allow an hour or so if you're stopping here as part of a broader visit - longer if the walks appeal. It fits perfectly into a caravan holiday at Reraig, just a five-minute drive away, giving you an excuse to get out without committing to a full day's expedition. Best visited outside school holidays when the place is actually quiet. Not Instagram material, but genuinely restorative.
