Picketts Wood

Picketts Wood is a modest nature reserve just outside Crawley - the kind of place that rewards a slow wander rather than a quick tick-box visit. It's woodland, pure and simple, with paths threading through mixed trees and plenty of space to actually hear yourself think. On a decent day the dappled light through the canopy is genuinely lovely, and you'll spot birds and insects if you're paying attention. The whole thing feels properly removed from the town despite being so close.

It's ideal for families with younger kids or anyone after a straightforward walk without pretension. Two hours is plenty to do the main paths without rushing. History enthusiasts might find the woodland ecology interesting, though this isn't a site loaded with facts or interpretation boards - it's just good, honest woodland. Dog walkers will appreciate the space too.

Bring decent shoes because it can get boggy in spots, particularly after rain. Winter's actually a cracking time to visit if you're keen on spotting birds through the bare branches. The reserve appears to be free to access, which is refreshing.

It won't blow your mind, but it's exactly what a local nature reserve should be - accessible, quiet, and genuinely nice for a proper walk.
