Pickering's Meadow

The meadow spreads out flat and wide, the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think. Pickering's Meadow, just outside Lincoln, is a proper nature reserve - no visitor centre, no gift shop, just grassland, wildflowers and whatever birds fancy stopping by. You walk straight in during daylight hours, free of charge.

It's the kind of spot that rewards patience. Spring and early summer are when it comes alive - orchids, fritillaries, the whole works. Walkers and amateur naturalists will spend a good couple of hours here poking about with binoculars. If you're after dramatic vistas or anything too showy, you'll find it a bit underwhelming. Pair it with Lincoln's cathedral and the wider attractions in the area, and you've got a decent day sorted. Allow a couple of hours minimum, longer if you're methodical about spotting things.
