Pibble Hill

The walk up Pibble Hill takes about ninety minutes if you're moving at a decent pace, and the reward is a proper panorama across Dumfries and Galloway that makes the effort worthwhile. It's not a bruising climb - nothing like the higher peaks you'll find further north - but it's steep enough in places to feel like you've earned the view. On a clear day you can see right across the Solway towards the Lake District fells, which is rather good for a Scottish Lowlands hill.

This one's ideal for walkers who want something more than a flat stroll but aren't ready to tackle proper mountain terrain. Families with kids aged eight or upwards should manage it without complaints, though younger ones might find the legs get tired before the top. The path itself is well-trodden and obvious most of the way.

Castle Douglas sits just a few miles away, so you could combine this with a wander round that little market town. There's Auchenlarie Holiday Park nearby if you're staying in the area, and it's close enough to reach as a morning or afternoon outing without eating your whole day. Go early if possible - the weather in the Lowlands can turn, and afternoon cloud often sweeps in by mid-day. Free to access, no facilities at the top, so bring water and something to eat.
