You'll need to ring ahead to book a slot; it's not the kind of place that takes walk-ups, and green fees are reasonable by most standards. Allow three to three and a half hours for a full round, longer if you're not quick through the rough. The layout suits all handicaps, though it's nowhere near brutally difficult - useful if you're playing with someone who's just picked up a club.

Golfers will get the most from it, obviously, but it pairs nicely with a broader South Yorkshire break. Rother Valley Country Park is just down the road and offers watersports and proper countryside walking if your group's split between golfers and non-golfers. Waleswood and Hooton Lodge Farm are both close enough that you could easily pop back to the caravan after breakfast and be on the first tee by mid-morning.

It's the sort of course where you go for the game rather than the spectacle. No Michelin stars in the clubhouse, no manicured greens like you'd find further south. But if you want a decent midweek round without the faffing about, Phoenix does the job.
