Pewfall Reservoir

The water sits grey and still most days, ringed by moorland that rolls back towards the Pennines. Pewfall Reservoir near Skelmersdale isn't dramatic - there's no café, no visitor centre, no car park with sweeping views. What you get instead is a proper bit of Lancashire countryside that feels genuinely quiet.

It's a walker's spot, essentially. The shoreline path gives you a decent circuit if you've got an hour or so, and the water itself draws the occasional angler. The surrounding moorland has that boggy, windswept character typical of this part of the North West - lovely in sunshine, properly grim when the cloud comes in low.

History types might appreciate the engineering of it all - Victorian reservoirs have their own appeal if you care about how these things were built. Kids will be bored within twenty minutes unless they're the type who'll throw stones and hunt for wildlife, in which case they might stretch it to an hour.

Free to visit, and there's no real infrastructure to speak of, so bring what you need. Best on a clear day when you can actually see across it; on a grey afternoon it's just a puddle in the mist.
