Persie Distillery

The first thing that hits you walking into Persie is the smell - all warm grain and fresh spirit, nothing manufactured about it. This is a proper working distillery just outside Blairgowrie, the sort of place where they're actually making whisky rather than just selling the story of it. You get to see the whole operation: copper stills gleaming in the light, barrels stacked in warehouse darkness, the kind of detail most visitors never clock because they're too busy taking photos for Instagram.

The tour itself feels genuine. Staff know what they're talking about and won't patronise you if you ask a daft question - they explain fermentation times, cask types, why some spirit gets bottled at five years and some at twelve. The tasting at the end is where it gets good, though expect to pay for that pleasure. It's not free entry, but then decent distilleries rarely are, and this one justifies it.

You'll want a couple of hours minimum, longer if you're keen on the subject. Families with older kids work fine here; younger ones tend to get restless once the chemistry chat starts. The location is ideal if you're based at Corriefodly or Glenshee Glamping - both are minutes away - and it pairs well with exploring the wider Perthshire countryside. Go on a quieter weekday if you can; weekends draw the tour coach crowd from further afield.
