Periton Hill

The walk up Periton Hill rewards you with proper views across Exmoor and out towards the Bristol Channel - the kind of vista that makes the climb worthwhile. It's not exactly a gruelling trek from Minehead, more a pleasant uphill ramble that takes the better part of an hour depending on your pace and fitness.

You get decent 360-degree sightlines from the top. On a clear day you can pick out the water in the distance, and the moorland rolling away in all directions gives you a real sense of being somewhere. It's the sort of hill that looks modest on the map but feels properly elevated once you're up there.

Walkers will get the most from this - it's straightforward enough for families with older kids, though younger ones might find the climb a bit of a slog. History enthusiasts will appreciate the views from what's clearly been an important vantage point for centuries. Allow a couple of hours if you're not rushing and want to sit about at the top with a flask.
