Percival Mallets

Just east of Sudbury sits Percival Mallets, a Suffolk landmark that doesn't announce itself loudly but rewards those who bother to find it. This is proper local history - the sort of place that makes sense once you're standing there, less so if you're just reading about it online.

The Mallets themselves are ancient earthworks, remnants of what was likely a Norman motte-and-bailey castle or fortified settlement. You're looking at raised ground, ditches, and the bones of medieval defensive architecture. It's not Carisbrooke Castle or anything dramatic - there's no keep, no ruined walls to clamber over. What you get instead is the landscape itself, the raw topography that someone thought worth protecting eight centuries ago.

History enthusiasts will find it genuinely interesting, especially if you're already exploring Sudbury's medieval core. Walkers passing through the Suffolk countryside might add it to their route without complaint. Kids under twelve will likely find it underwhelming unless they're the sort who get excited by earthworks and old maps.

Allow twenty minutes to half an hour if you stop to read any interpretation boards that might be there. Best visited as part of a wider ramble rather than a destination in itself. If you're staying at any of the nearby parks - The Huts at Woodthorpes, Cranfield Retreat, or Lake View Lodges are all within easy driving distance - it's worth a morning detour before heading elsewhere in Suffolk. Spring or autumn light works well for photography if that's your thing.
