Penwith Heritage Coast

The granite cliffs along this stretch of coast near Penzance are the real deal - not the postcard version, but the actual thing. You're standing on some of the oldest rock formations in Britain, watching the Atlantic hurl itself against stone that's been there for 300 million years. It puts things in perspective, that does.

Walking the coastal path here is what you come for. The route takes you past abandoned tin mines, their stone engine houses still standing like sentries above the water, and along clifftops where you can actually feel the wind trying to move you sideways. On a clear day you can see for miles. On a rough day, which is often, the drama is even better - the sea proper angry, the light sharp and strange.

This isn't a visitor centre with tea and biscuits. It's a landscape, and it demands something of you. Families with confident walkers will get hours here; those with toddlers might find it limiting. History buffs will spend a full day spotting mining heritage and reading the narrative of Cornwall's industrial past in the ruins.

Allow three to four hours minimum for a decent walk, longer if you're stopping to photograph or contemplate. The clifftop paths are free and accessible most of the year, though winter storms occasionally close sections.

Camped at either Lands End or Roselands, you're within striking distance for a half-day or full-day exploration. Pair it with a visit to Land's End itself if you must, but honestly, the heritage coast is where the real interest lies.
