Pentre-Meurig Hill

The walk up Pentre-Meurig Hill rewards you with proper views across the Carmarthenshire countryside - rolling fields, distant ridges, and on clear days, enough landscape to make the climb feel worthwhile. It's not a massive peak, nothing that will leave you gasping, but it's the kind of place where you genuinely feel like you've got somewhere once you reach the top.

This is walker territory, really. Families with young kids might find the approach a bit steep for what it is, but anyone comfortable with a decent trudge will get on fine. The hill works brilliantly as a half-day outing from Carmarthen if you're based at one of the nearby parks - Church House Farm Getaways is only three miles away, and Quarry Lodge Campsite or Woodland Rise aren't much further. Pair it with a walk around the Tywi Valley and you've got yourself a proper day out.

Allow a couple of hours return, depending on your pace and whether you're stopping to take photos. There's nothing fancy at the top - no café, no facilities - so bring water and whatever snacks you fancy. You'll want to go when the weather's cooperating; mid-morning on a clear day is ideal, gives you the best light and views. The path itself is fairly straightforward, well-trodden enough that you won't get lost, though it can be muddy after rain.

Worth doing if you're in the area and fancy a bit of elevation with a decent payoff. Not worth planning a whole holiday around, but absolutely the sort of spot that makes a caravan break in South Wales tick over nicely.
