Penrith (center parcs)

Center Parcs at Penrith sits on the edge of the Lake District, and it's genuinely one of those rare all-weather breaks that works whether the sun's out or it's bucketing down. The whole setup revolves around that massive subtropical dome - you'll spend half your time in there with the kids, splashing about in warm pools while it's pouring outside. Beyond the water park, there's the usual Center Parcs offering: restaurants, activity studios, a spa if you can book in advance, and enough organized things to fill a week without ever feeling bored.

Walkers won't find this the best base for serious fell days, but families after a proper mix of outdoor activity and indoor backup will get loads out of it. The parks themselves are genuinely pleasant for wandering, especially if you time it right to dodge the school holidays crowds. Budget a full week if you can - three days feels rushed.

The nearby campsites offer a different flavour entirely. Crossfells, just 2.2 miles out, is five-star rated and properly feels like a proper campground with actual peace. Lowther's 3.3 miles down the road if you want something less fussy. Howdy Glamping at 3.5 miles is the Instagram option - bell tents, proper beds, but at a price.

The real strength here is that Penrith town itself is minutes away for supply runs and proper restaurants, and you're genuinely close enough to Ullswater for a proper Lake District day out. It's not the most authentic Cumbrian experience, but it works.
