Pennard Hill

The climb to Pennard Hill's summit takes roughly twenty minutes from the car park near Glastonbury, and the effort pays off with genuine 360-degree views across the Somerset Levels. On a clear day you can pick out Glastonbury Tor and the distant Mendips - proper rewarding stuff after a bit of legwork. The hill itself isn't dramatic; it's more of a gentle slope that builds gradually, with fields and scrubland underfoot rather than anything technical.

This is walker territory, no question. Families with young kids might find it bit of a stretch depending on their age and fitness, though older children who enjoy a proper countryside ramble will take it in their stride. The path's straightforward and well-used, so navigation isn't an issue. Allow an hour for the round trip if you're not rushing.

Going at golden hour - either early morning or late afternoon - transforms the whole experience. The light gets exceptional and you'll have the summit largely to yourself, which is rare for Somerset attractions. Winter walks are lovely too, when the air's crisp and visibility stretches for miles.
