Pendower Meadow

The walk through Pendower Meadow is genuinely lovely - proper wildflower territory that catches you off guard if you're expecting manicured Cornwall. This nature reserve sits inland from the coast near Bodmin, and it's the kind of place that rewards slow exploration rather than a quick tick-box visit.

You'll find yourself moving through uncut grassland that bursts with colour depending on the season. Spring brings bluebells and wood anemones; summer explodes with orchids and buttercups. The meadow isn't huge, so you're not talking hours here - more like an hour or so if you dawdle and actually look at things. Birdwatchers get genuinely excited about the variety; families with young kids might find it a bit quiet after twenty minutes unless they're the type to crouch down and hunt for insects.

What makes it work is the contrast. You're far enough inland that it feels properly rural, but close enough to Bodmin that it's not a hassle to reach. If you're based at Camp De Lank, which sits five miles away, this makes a decent half-day outing - brings some variety to a camping holiday without requiring serious logistics.

Don't expect facilities or car parks with names. It's a reserve run by locals who care about the wildflowers more than comfort. That's also why it's worth visiting - they've left it alone. Wear proper boots if you've had rain; the ground gets squelchy. Go early morning for the best light and fewest people.
