Pendon Museum

The first time you walk into Pendon Museum, near Oxford, you're confronted with something genuinely strange and rather wonderful - an enormous model landscape built over decades by obsessive craftsmen. It's not a toy train set, though there are trains. It's a painstaking recreation of rural England as it was in the 1930s, stretching across rooms with such meticulous detail that you find yourself staring at miniature pub signs and tiny washing lines for far longer than you'd expect.

What you're looking at is the work of Alan Pegler and others who started this project in the 1920s and kept adding to it. The scale is impressive - whole villages rendered in exacting detail, complete with working railways and a level of historical accuracy that's genuinely absorbing. It's the sort of place that appeals immediately to model enthusiasts and railway buffs, but also to anyone curious about how English villages actually functioned before the war.

You'll want a good hour here, maybe two if you're keen on detail. Families with young children might find their attention wandering after thirty minutes unless there's a serious train interest involved.
