Most people come here to walk up to the fortress proper, which involves a decent climb but rewards you with views across to Falmouth and Saint Mawes Castle opposite.

This works best for families who don't mind a bit of exertion and for anyone serious about coastal history. The castle itself dates back to 1545 when Henry VIII was paranoid about French invasion, and you can feel that defensive paranoia in its thick walls and narrow gun ports. Allow a good two hours minimum if you're visiting both the castle and grounds - an hour of that spent wandering round the headland itself.

If you're based at Trethem Mill Touring Park, just 3.5 miles away, this is a natural half-day trip that slots perfectly between beach visits and quieter exploration. The castle does charge for entry - check ahead - but the views from the car park and surrounding headland are free. The path can get muddy after rain and it's genuinely steep in places, so proper shoes matter. Winter and spring are quieter; summer gets rammed with school groups. Worth the detour if military history appeals to you; less compelling if you just want beaches and ice cream.
