Penberth Cove

The first time I rounded the corner down to Penberth, I had to stop. A working fishing village tumbling straight into the sea - proper Cornish, the sort of place you thought had vanished thirty years ago. Colourful boats still haul catch up the slipway, net sheds line the beach, and the whole cove feels lived-in rather than preserved. That's what makes it.

You won't find much to "do" in the traditional sense, and that's entirely the point. Walk down to the water's edge, watch the fishermen work, grab a pasty from the local café if it's open. The coastal path delivers you here from either direction, so most visitors arrive on foot rather than driving down the narrow lane - sensible, that, given parking is tight. Allow an hour to potter about, chat to the locals, photograph the boats from a dozen angles.

Families with young kids get a kick out of spotting the working fishing operation - it's genuine industry, not performance. Walkers use it as a waypoint on longer clifftop routes. Camera enthusiasts return repeatedly; the light changes everything here, and the ramshackle charm reads differently in morning gold versus afternoon shadow.

The nearest proper base is Penzance, but staying at Lands End Camping & Glamping or Roselands Caravan Camping Park puts you within easy reach. From either, Penberth works as a morning ramble or lazy afternoon detour. It's free to visit, weather permitting. Go early or late to miss the hour when day-trippers pile in.
