Pen y Garn

Pen y Garn is a proper woodland walk through dense forestry just outside Llandeilo, and it's one of those places that rewards you for making the effort without demanding too much of you. The forest canopy is thick enough that even on grey Welsh days it feels atmospheric - mossy paths, the occasional glimpse of open moorland above the treeline, and the kind of quiet that makes you realise how little you hear birdsong in towns. Most people allow an hour to ninety minutes for the circuit, which is about right if you're not rushing.

This works best for walkers who want a bit of leg-work but aren't after a gruelling hike. Kids will manage it fine if they're reasonably mobile - the paths are clear enough and there's something oddly compelling about being surrounded by that many trees. If you're staying at one of the nearby glamping spots like Ravenscroft Retreats or Route 47, this is exactly the sort of morning walk that justifies staying locally rather than chasing bigger attractions further afield. It slots neatly into a weekend of proper countryside time without the fanfare.

There's no charge to walk here as far as I can tell, and no fancy facilities - which is rather the point. Go when the weather's settled because the paths get properly boggy in heavy rain. It's not a dramatic landscape, but it's genuinely Welsh woodland without the crowds you'd get at more famous spots. Worth fitting in if you're based in Carmarthenshire, but don't expect it to be the highlight of your trip.
