Pen y Foel-ddu

A steep climb up to moorland grassland and rocky outcrops - that's what Pen y Foel-ddu amounts to, and it's worth the legwork if you're based around Blaenau Ffestiniog. The summit sits at 610 metres, so it's not a towering peak, but the ascent is proper boggy in places and the exposed terrain makes it feel higher than it is. The views roll out across Snowdonia when the weather cooperates, though I'll be honest - on a grey day it's all grey moorland stretching to grey sky.

This is walker territory, full stop. You won't find cafes or facilities; you're out on the hill with a map and your legs. Allow a good two hours return from the car park, maybe longer if the ground's wet. It's neither a quick stroll nor a serious scramble - think intermediate fell walking. Families with older kids who can handle moorland won't struggle, but younger children and anyone after a gentle amble should look elsewhere.

Free to access, as with most Welsh peaks. The nearest proper stop for supplies is Blaenau Ffestiniog itself, a town built on slate mining - worth exploring if you're staying locally. If you're glamping at Llechwedd Glamping at Plas Weunydd just down the road, this makes a solid day walk to stretch the legs between park time. The terrain's rough enough to be interesting without being technical, and you'll have the moorland largely to yourself midweek.
