Pen Wern-Corgam

The walk up Pen Wern-Corgam rewards you with proper countryside views across Carmarthenshire. It's not a massive peak - more a solid hill walk that takes the best part of an hour from Carmarthen - but on a clear day you can see across the Tywi Valley and beyond. The summit itself is fairly open moorland with a few scattered rocks. Walkers will appreciate it more than families looking for a quick afternoon out; younger kids might find the climb a bit tedious without much of a payoff at the top.

There's no visitor centre or facilities up here, so bring water and decent boots. The ground can be boggy, especially after rain. Go in the morning if you want any chance of clear views - cloud rolls in quickly by afternoon. It's free, of course, and there's parking somewhere near the base of the route.

If you're staying at one of the caravan parks dotted around the area - Church House Farm is closest at just over a mile away, or Steffan Valley a bit further out - this makes a decent half-day walk without eating up the whole day. Carmarthen itself is worth a wander through its medieval town centre afterwards. It's the kind of outing that breaks up a park holiday nicely rather than something you'd plan a whole trip around.
