The walk up Pen Hill takes you proper high for the Lowlands - at 2,268 feet, you're looking at a serious scramble from Newton Stewart, but the views across Dumfries and Galloway make the effort worthwhile. On a clear day the sight of the hills rolling away toward the coast is something else entirely. The summit itself is rocky and exposed, which means the wind can be fierce, so bring layers even when it looks calm at the base.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a casual stroll - the terrain is rough in places and the ascent doesn't mess about - but it's exactly the sort of hill that rewards you for the work. You're looking at three to four hours round trip depending on fitness and pace. Families with older children who've tackled hills before will be fine; younger kids might struggle with the exposure near the top.

There's no visitor centre or facilities at the summit, so bring water and snacks. The route starts from accessible parking near Newton Stewart, which makes it accessible without needing to book anything in advance. Free to walk, obviously.

If you're staying at Drumroamin Farm just down the road, this is a brilliant way to spend a morning. It's the sort of Lowlands hill that doesn't get crowded, and that's precisely why it's worth doing.
