Pelton Wheel

The Pelton Wheel sits in Kinlochleven like an industrial relic that someone actually bothered to preserve. It's a working museum piece - a massive water wheel that powered the old aluminium smelter here back in the day when this Highland town was proper industrial. You walk around it, read the panels, and suddenly the whole place makes sense. The scale of the thing is what gets you; it's genuinely impressive in person.

Historians and industrial archaeology types will spend a good hour here, maybe longer if they're really into that side of things. Families with younger kids might find it a bit static - there's not much hands-on stuff - but teenagers interested in engineering or Scottish industrial heritage will actually engage with it. The setting helps. You're surrounded by mountains and lochs, which makes the contrast between heavy industry and wild landscape quite striking.

The gallery element means there's some context and interpretation alongside the wheel itself, which lifts it above just looking at old machinery. Allow 45 minutes to an hour, longer if you're thorough.

It works well as a half-day stop if you're based at one of the local campsite options - Blackwater Hostel is practically on the doorstep, or Red Squirrel Campsite up the road is well-rated. Kinlochleven itself sits on the West Highland Way, so if you're doing serious walking, this breaks up the day nicely. Not a reason to come to the Highlands on its own, but definitely worth an hour if you're passing through.
