Peeping Tom

The story of Peeping Tom is one of those peculiar Coventry legends that locals love to tell and visitors find thoroughly odd. Back in 1040, a noblewoman called Lady Godiva rode naked through the streets of Coventry to protest her husband's harsh taxes - and according to tradition, a tailor named Tom couldn't resist having a look. For his transgression, he was struck blind. Dark stuff, really.

These days there's not much to see at the actual site - it's more about knowing where to stand and imagining the chaos of that medieval moment. History buffs will get a kick out of it, even if the physical remains are thin on the ground. It won't take more than twenty minutes to visit, and it reads best as part of a wider Coventry wander rather than a standalone trip.
