Peeping Hill

The walk up to Peeping Hill from Appleby-in-Westmorland is straightforward enough - nothing technical, just a steady climb through proper fell country. What catches you when you reach the summit is how far you can actually see from here. The Pennines roll out in one direction, and on a clear day the Lake District hills are plainly visible across to the west. It's the sort of viewpoint that rewards the effort without being punishing about it.

This is walker territory, really. An hour's round trip from town if you're steady, less if you're quick. Families with teenagers will find it manageable; young kids might struggle with the climb unless they're used to hills. The ground can be boggy in places after rain, so decent boots matter more than you'd think for what seems like a modest height.

There's something honest about Peeping Hill. It doesn't put on airs. No cairn, no café, no gift shop waiting at the top. Just good views and a chance to see how the landscape stacks up from above. If you're staying at Wild Rose Holiday Park, only 5.6 miles away, it's exactly the sort of local walk worth doing before heading elsewhere - not a day trip destination in itself, but a proper addition to a longer wander through the Eden Valley. The town of Appleby itself is worth poking around afterwards if you've got time.
