Peel of Fichie Mote and Bailey Castle

There's a proper sense of occasion walking up to what remains of Peel of Fichie - a motte and bailey castle that sits above Aboyne in Aberdeenshire like some ancient guardian of the Highlands. The earthworks are still substantial, even after centuries of weathering, with the steep mound where the keep once stood rising impressively from the surrounding land. It's the kind of place that makes you understand why medieval folk chose this spot: commanding views, defensible position, nowhere for trouble to sneak up on you.

You're essentially looking at two things here - the elevated motte where the main fortress would have sat, and the broader bailey around it where the domestic buildings clustered.
