Hill of Corrachree

The walk up Corrachree is less about dramatic views and more about a proper Scottish hill experience - rolling moorland, wide-open sky, and the kind of solitude you don't often find close to civilisation. It's a modest peak by Highland standards, but that's rather the point. You'll get a genuine sense of accomplishment without needing mountaineering skills or a full day's commitment.

From Aboyne, it's an easy drive to the trailhead. The ascent itself takes roughly two hours up and back down - straightforward fell walking on good tracks, though the weather can turn quickly, as it does everywhere around here. The moorland terrain is manageable for families with older kids, though younger ones might find the openness a bit exposed. Walkers after a proper stretch of the legs will appreciate it; those after a Instagram-ready summit might feel underwhelmed.

What you actually get for your effort is a 360-degree perspective across Deeside - Lochnagar dominates to the south on clear days, and the whole valley spreads out beneath you. It's less about the peak itself and more about being somewhere quiet enough to hear yourself think.

If you're camping at Tarland (literally down the road) or Firbank, Corrachree works perfectly as a morning excursion before breakfast. Free to walk, no fees, no facilities at the top - bring water and decent boots. Go in late spring or early autumn when midges are less likely to make your life miserable. Worth the walk for the right person, but don't expect it to match the bigger-name peaks nearby.
