Peartree Nature Area

The Peartree Nature Area sits just outside South Brent, a proper slice of Devon woodland that doesn't get the crowds of bigger attractions. It's a working nature reserve where locals go to actually see something - woodland birds, insects, the lot - rather than just tick a box. The walking trails are gentle, nothing strenuous, which means families with younger kids won't be dragging anyone along by the end.

What you get here is peace. Real peace. The kind where you can hear leaves shifting and spot a kestrel without fighting through crowds. The reserve management takes its job seriously, so paths are maintained and there's actual habitat work happening. You'll spot information boards dotted about if you want to know what's nesting or feeding at different times of year.

It's free to visit, which is one reason it's worth factoring into a long weekend at either Ashbourne Woods or Dornafield - both only a few miles away. Allocate ninety minutes minimum if you're actually walking the circuits properly. Spring is excellent for bird activity; autumn gives you decent fungi spotting. Summer's warm but can feel a touch muggy under the tree cover.

Not the sort of place for adrenaline junkies or anyone after a quick Instagram snap. But if you're staying at a nearby caravan park and fancy stretching your legs somewhere genuinely quiet, with the chance of spotting something interesting, this delivers. South Brent's close enough for supplies, too.
