About Pearl and Earl

Two giant concrete elephants stand in a field just outside Arundel, and honestly, they're impossible to miss once you know they're there. Pearl and Earl have been watching over the Sussex countryside since the 1950s, originally created as a roadside attraction that somehow endured. They're enormous - far bigger than you'd expect from a distance - and utterly incongruous against the rolling Downs landscape.

You'll stop for fifteen minutes, maybe twenty if you're the type to circle round taking photos from different angles. Kids find them properly entertaining, especially when they realise they can actually walk right up close without any barriers. It's free and entirely unstaffed, which adds to the oddness of the whole thing. The real appeal is the sheer absurdity of stumbling upon two concrete pachyderms in deepest West Sussex - the sort of thing that makes a family caravan holiday memorable for all the right reasons.

If you're based at South Downs Caravan Park, barely a mile away, it's a quick detour worth making. Same goes if you're staying anywhere around Arundel itself. It won't take long, but it breaks up a day nicely, and you'll get a decent photo that makes people ask questions. The elephants have seen better days weatherwise, but that's rather part of their charm.
