Peake Wood

Peake Wood is a proper woodland walk just outside Waterlooville, the kind of place you slip into on a quiet afternoon without needing to book anything or pay anyone. The forest is dense enough to feel like you've actually left Hampshire behind, even though you're barely a few miles from town. Beech and oak dominate, with plenty of shade and a decent network of paths that don't require navigation skills to enjoy.

It's ideal for families wanting an hour or two in the trees without the faffing about of a bigger country house visit. Kids will find fallen logs to climb on and plenty of natural cover for games. Walkers get undemanding terrain and some gentle inclines that build enough interest without leaving you knackered. Bring wellies if there's been rain - the forest floor holds water in patches.

The main draw is simply the breathing space. No visitor centre, no gift shop, no crowd management. You get woodland peace, which sounds basic but feels increasingly rare. Spring is particularly good when the undergrowth comes alive.

It works well as a stop-off if you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Cedar Valley or Glamping at Wallops Wood - both within three miles. Pop into the wood for a stretch, then head back for dinner. Not a day-long destination, but honest and straightforward. The kind of place that does exactly what it says on the tin.
